About the project
Casa Tucán is a residential project built in 2023 by architect Eduardo Leñero in Tulum. The house is conceived as a massive refuge that faces the jungle head-on, using a palette of raw, heavy, low-maintenance materials to withstand the Caribbean climate.
Facade and Exterior Massing
From the street, the building appears as a solid block of gray concrete that respects and wraps around the existing trees on the site. The upper floor stands out for a long planter overflowing with ferns, breaking the rigidity of the main volume. The lower perimeter is protected by a solid black metal gate that contrasts with the pedestrian entrance: a sturdy natural wood door. This entrance is welcomed by a sand front garden and a hexagonal cement-tile mat that marks the transition from public to private.
Social Areas and Pool
Inside, the layout removes physical barriers to the outdoors. The dining room and kitchen sit beneath an exposed concrete slab and open fully onto the patio through sliding windows. The focal point of the house is the pool, accompanied by a wood deck and flanked by an imposing wall of ochre-red pigmented stucco. This wall adds a bold accent of color that makes the green of the tropical vegetation vibrate. The area is completed by a sunken outdoor lounge built entirely in masonry.
Bedrooms and Rest
The private zone keeps a sober, almost shadowy aesthetic, designed strictly for rest. The interiors combine continuous dark concrete floors with smooth walls and board-formed concrete accents. To bring warmth to the rawness of the grays, natural wood doors and textile details were added. The bedrooms do without unnecessary ornament, focusing attention on large floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the jungle and ensure constant natural ventilation.
